What Is Microneedling for Stretch Marks?


Stretch marks (striae distensae) occur when the skin is stretched rapidly — during

pregnancy, growth spurts, or weight changes — causing the collagen and elastin

fibers in the deeper layers of skin to break. Microneedling creates tiny punctures in

the stretch mark tissue, triggering your body's natural healing response to produce

new collagen and elastin, which helps fill in and smooth out the stretch marks.

Stretch marks come in two forms:


- Striae rubrae (early stretch marks) — red or pink in color, still actively forming

- Striae albae (mature stretch marks) — white or silver in color, fully formed

Study 1. Systematic Review Meta-Analysis: Microneedling for Stretch Marks

— 11 Studies (Sun et al., 2024)


What they did: Analyzed 11 studies (6 randomized controlled trials and 5 non-

randomized studies) on microneedling for stretch marks.

What they found — measured outcomes:

- Microneedling was significantly more effective than non-laser treatments (p

0.0001)

- Microneedling produced comparable improvement to laser treatments — no

significant difference

- Patient satisfaction was significantly higher with microneedling than with laser (p

= 0.04)

- Risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (skin darkening) was significantly

lower with microneedling than laser (p = 0.0003)

- Over 70% of patients showed clinical improvement


Impact on skin: ✅ Positive — As effective as laser with fewer side effects and

higher satisfaction.

Strength of evidence: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Strong — Level II evidence from a well-conducted

meta-analysis.

Study 2. Meta-Analysis: Microneedling vs. CO₂ Laser for Stretch Marks — 6

RCTs (Mustafa et al., 2025)


What they did: Analyzed 6 randomized controlled trials with 166 patients comparing

microneedling to fractional CO₂ laser for stretch marks.


What they found — measured outcomes:

- No significant difference in clinical improvement between microneedling and

CO₂ laser (p = 0.85)

- No significant difference in patient satisfaction (p = 0.10)

- No significant difference in stretch mark size reduction (p = 0.24)

- CO₂ laser caused 8.4 times more post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation than

microneedling (p = 0.02)


Impact on skin: ✅ Positive — Microneedling matches laser results with dramatically

lower risk of skin darkening.

Strength of evidence: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Strong — Meta-analysis of 6 RCTs.

Study 3. Comparative Study: Early vs. Mature Stretch Marks (Marin et al.,

2026)


What they did: 29 subjects with both early (red/pink) and mature (white/silver)

stretch marks received 4 monthly microneedling treatments. Untreated areas on

the opposite side of the body served as controls. Patients were followed for 6 months

after the last treatment.

What they found — measured improvements:

Stretch Mark Type Improvement at 3 Months Improvement at 6 Months

- Results continued to improve between 3 and 6 months after the last treatment

- No adverse events reported

- All post-procedure reactions were temporary


Recommended treatment: 4 sessions, 1 month apart. Treat early stretch marks for

best results. Expect continued improvement for 6+ months.

Impact on skin: ✅ Positive — Both types improve, with better results when

treatment begins early.

Study 4. Clinical Study: Stretch Marks in Light and Dark Skin — Long-Term

Follow-Up (Alster Li, 2020)


What they did: 25 adults (skin types I–V) with stretch marks on the trunk and

extremities received 1–3 monthly microneedling treatments with no additional

topical or injectable treatments.


What they found — measured improvements:

- 100% of stretch marks improved at least 50% after an average of just 1.8

treatments

- 28% of patients achieved more than 75% improvement

- Stretch marks in thicker skin areas (buttocks/thighs) improved equally well as

those in thinner skin (breasts)

- No infections or skin discoloration — even in darker skin tones

- Side effects limited to temporary redness

Recommended treatment: 1–3 sessions, 1 month apart. Average of 1.8 sessions

needed.

Impact on skin: ✅ Positive — Effective and safe across all skin types with very few

sessions needed.

Strength of evidence: ⭐⭐⭐ Moderate — Blinded assessment, diverse skin types.

Study 5. Randomized Trial: Microneedling vs. CO₂ Laser for White Stretch

Marks (Saki et al., 2022)


What they did: 40 patients with white/silver stretch marks were randomly assigned

to receive 4 monthly sessions of either microneedling or fractional CO₂ laser, with

10 months of follow-up.

What they found:

- Both treatments significantly reduced stretch mark size (p 0.001)

- No significant difference between microneedling and CO₂ laser at any time point

- No significant difference in patient satisfaction or visual appearance scores

- No clinically significant adverse effects with either treatment


Recommended treatment: 4 sessions, 1 month apart. Results maintained at 10

months.

Impact on skin: ✅ Positive — Microneedling is as effective as CO₂ laser while

being more economical.

Strength of evidence: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Strong — Randomized trial with 10-month follow-up.

Study 6. Clinical Study: Microneedling for White Stretch Marks — 32 Patients

(Siadat et al., 2023)


What they did: 32 patients with white/silver stretch marks received 1–3

microneedling sessions at 2-week intervals. Two independent dermatologists and

patient self-reports assessed improvement at 3 months.

What they found — measured improvements:

- Average patient self-reported improvement score: 5.3 out of 10

- Average physician-assessed improvement score: 5.6 out of 10

- Younger patients reported higher satisfaction

- Breast stretch marks responded better than other locations

- Complication rate: 25% (mostly temporary darkening that resolved)


Recommended treatment: 1–3 sessions, 2 weeks apart.

Impact on skin: ✅ Positive — Moderate improvement, with better results in younger

patients.

Strength of evidence: ⭐⭐⭐ Moderate — Good sample size with independent

physician assessment.
